University Hospital, a 604-bed acute care hospital, is the primary teaching facility for The UT Health Science Center at San Antonio. University Health System has achieved many medical "firsts" for South Texas, including the first heart, lung, and heart-lung transplants, as well as the first newborn heart transplant. University Health System is renowned for having one of the largest transplant programs in South Texas.

University Hospital, the leading civilian trauma center in Bexar County, with physicians representing every medical specialty, meets the highest national and state standards of trauma care and is designated as a Level-I Trauma Center capable of providing care for the most seriously injured trauma patients. The Emergency Center averages 70,000 emergency patients each year.

University Health System provides health care for families at our neighborhood locations, including: the University Health Center-Downtown, an outpatient facility featuring over 100 primary and specialty care clinics; University Health Centers - Southwest and Southeast offering primary and family health care services, as well as preventive care, and University Center for Community Health, comprised of the Texas Diabetes Institute (TDI), a national center for diabetes research, training, and treatment, the Village of Hope, serving children with developmental disabilities, and University Dialysis-West. Other facilities include the University Family Health Center - North, Northwest and Community First Health Plans, HMO as well as the Bexar County Adult and Juvenile Detention Center medical facilities.
