2014 Community Trauma Report

University Hospital’s Level I trauma center occupies state-of-the-art facilities in the new Sky Tower, which opened in April 2014. An expanded, dedicated Trauma Resuscitation Unit, with separate bays for children, has its own ambulance entrance within the hospital’s new Emergency Department. Two operating rooms are dedicated to traumas and emergencies, allowing immediate access for trauma patients around the clock. These new integrated ORs feature high-resolution video displays and touch-screen controls. The ORs include a hybrid OR with enhanced capabilities to perform both endovascular and traditional surgeries. The hospital features a 30-bed trauma ICU and an inpatient trauma unit with all-private rooms. Two board-certified UT Medicine trauma/critical care faculty are in house at all times, working closely with a dedicated trauma nursing staff and other members of the trauma team. In 2013, a new trauma nurse fellowship was created to increase the ranks of experienced and specially-trained trauma nurses. A complete range of surgical specialties with UT Medicine are available to trauma patients, including orthopedics, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, urology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, ophthalmology and more.
