Investigational Drug Service Pharmacy

The Investigational Drug Service (IDS) Pharmacy provides full research pharmacy services to support clinical trials, including but not limited to, consulting services to develop pharmacy-related aspects of a protocol, a secured location for drug storage and dispensing, subject randomization and blinding, preconfigured order entry for both inpatient and outpatient studies, and protocol adherence, such as drug counseling and drug accountability.

The IDS pharmacy is located within the inpatient pharmacy on the first floor of the Rio Tower at University Hospital Main Campus. The IDS pharmacy has access to both hazardous and non-hazardous clean rooms for sterile compounding, as well as its own designated locked space for storage and preparation of medication for clinical trials. This includes room temperature, refrigerated and frozen study drugs.

The IDS also stores study binders and is equipped to facilitate study monitor visits with advance notice.

A brief summary of IDS services available to investigators includes:

  • Inventory Control: Ordering, Receipt, Expiration Tracking, Documentation of shipments

  • Preparation and maintenance of drug accountability records

  • Compounding and preparation of study drug

  • Continuous temperature tracking

  • Meetings with investigators and study monitors

  • In-Service and Education for pharmacy staff

  • Blinding of Investigational Drugs

  • Accountability audits

  • Study termination: Reconciliation of drug accountability records, Drug destruction/return, and maintenance of discontinued study pharmacy products

Pharmacy Fees

  • The IDS Pharmacy does charge a fee for administrative set up, inventory management, and dispensing. Please contact the UHS Research Department for fee information.
