While our program can boast of excellent outcomes over the last three years, we are excited about our future and growth opportunities. The Pediatric and Congenital Cardiac Unit at University Children’s Health has been providing outstanding care to infants, children and young adults with congenital heart disease in a stand-alone variable acuity unit since April of 2014. The faculty of the UT Health San Antonio Division of Pediatric Critical Care provides 24/7 in-unit patient care; the care team is constituted of an attending physician and a mid-level provider or Critical Care fellow. Occupying the entire 9th floor of the Horizon Tower at University Hospital, the Heart Center includes 18 variable acuity patient rooms where technologically advanced, intensive patient care is provided as well as inpatient care, allowing the child to recover in the Heart Center throughout their stay, with the same multidisciplinary team. Along with the inpatient rooms where a family member is welcome to stay, the Heart Center also includes:
• family kitchen with laundry facilities
• family lounge and a library where families can find respite from the intensive care environment
• four hotel-like rooms for extended stay families
• beautiful and stimulating playroom
In addition to the inpatient, family centered care facility, the Heart Center also has four outpatient clinic rooms where services such as single ventricle clinic appointments, outpatient ECHOs and stress testing is provided. With the inclusion of all of these services in one area, the team at the Heart Center is fully prepared to meet the needs of each family faced with congenital heart disease.
