NEW PRODUCT
No medical equipment, supply or product may be utilized within University Health System unless an appropriate evaluation and authorization process by the responsible Product Evaluation Committee has occurred consistent with the requirements set forth in Product Evaluation Policy No. 6.06.
DEFINITION
(A) New Product is any previously approved medical supply or equipment item that has not been utilized in UHS for twenty-four (24) consecutive months or a newly introduced item.
(B) Product Evaluation Committee is the general term used for a multi-disciplinary committee responsible for evaluating and standardizing new alternative products, equipment, and new patient care technology, as well as evaluating increases in items that drive up costs. The Health System maintains three product evaluation committees: The Clinical Product Evaluation and Resource Committee (CPERC) and the Physician Product Evaluation Committee (PPEC), and the Perioperative Product Review Committee (PPRC).
Within the Health System there are three Product Evaluation Committees:
(A) Clinical Product Evaluation Resource Committee: The CPERC is a multi-disciplinary, cross-functional committee that evaluates products for the primary use of nursing and other clinical staff.
(B) Physician Product Evaluation Committee: A multidisciplinary committee that evaluates physician preference equipment or supply items. This committee consists of Physicians, Case management, Value Analysis Financial Analysis, Infection Control and Safety Departments; Hospital Administration, Chair of Nursing Services Committee, Hospital Administration, Sr. Executive Director Supply Chain or designee, and Chief Medical Officer (or designee).
(C) Perioperative Product Review Committee: The PPRC is a multi-disciplinary committee that evaluates products for primary use in Perioperative areas.
INTRODUCING YOUR PRODUCT – CLINICAL PRODUCT EVALUATION RESOURCE COMMITTEE OR PERIOPERATIVE PRODUCT REVIEW COMMITTEE
All new products must first be brought to the attention of the Inventory Management Department. Once Supply Chain has tentatively approved a new product, Sales Representatives will then be directed to the appropriate clinical personnel for further discussion of the product. If interest in the product continues, it will be placed on the appropriate evaluation committee agenda, for review and action.
(A) The CPERC/PPEC meets monthly or as needed and will evaluate all new and alternative patient care products for need, quality, utility, safety and financial implications.
(B) A department or individual seeking evaluation of a product will download a Request for Product Evaluation Form from the Health System’s website. This form must be completed four weeks in advance for presentation to the Committee and before any action can be taken.
